Tooth contouring

A beautiful smile usually stems from having straight and white teeth, but most people do not have their teeth as white or straight as they may wish for their smile to be beautiful. There are different reasons why a lot of people do not have a perfect smile or teeth.

Crooked or chipped teeth, uneven wearing down of the teeth, slight overlaps, different sized teeth or pitting surfaces are some of the things that prevent anyone from having a beautiful smile. All these teeth imperfections could cause some health problems as well as social esteem issues, but you can avoid these problems by correct them with teeth contouring.

Do I need teeth contouring?

The aim of carrying out a tooth contouring procedure is to re-shape slightly damaged, overgrown or abnormally shaped teeth. The process is a cosmetic one, and people mostly use it for correcting the upper, lateral, central, and canine teeth since they are the most visible set of teeth.

Carrying out a tooth contouring does not only improve the aesthetic of your smile but also helps improve your overall oral hygiene. If you have an overlap and you correct it with tooth contouring, it will be easier to clean your teeth, and this reduces the chances of having gum disease or tooth decay.

Tooth contouring may not be a suitable dental treatment option for everyone. For example, people with decaying tooth or alignment problems may need to treat these problems before contouring a tooth. Before you get a tooth contouring or any other dental procedure, your dentist will discuss with you, then access your teeth and gums to determine the best treatment option for you.

What is involved in tooth contouring procedure?

Tooth contouring requires about 2 – 3 visits to the dentist. On the first visit, you will discuss your treatment options with your dentist, and then the dentist will examine your teeth to ensure tooth contouring is the right treatment for you. The examination may also include teeth x-ray.

During the second visit, your dentist will carry out most of the contouring procedure. Your dentist will drill and polish your teeth with special dental equipment, then remove a small amount of the tooth, carving it to a better shape.

You may not need an anaesthetic for the procedure because it is usually not painful and requires only the removal of a part of the outer layer of the tooth. The process may last for about 30 minutes or more, depending on the amount of work you need in your teeth.

The third visit is usually a follow-up appointment, and during this visit, your dentist will examine your teeth and do the final touch-ups to the tooth.
