Orthodontic Retainersin London
Removal of Braces
Retainers must be used after braces to help prevent the teeth moving back to their original position. Retainers hold teeth in position and allow surrounding gums and bone to adjust. A patient will be required to wear the retainer at all times except when eating for a time set by the orthodontist. After this period it may only be necessary to wear retainers at night.
Removable retainers should be kept safe in a special case to protect them. During the first few days of retainer use, many people will experience extra saliva in their mouth. This is natural - due to the presence of a new object inside the mouth stimulating the saliva glands. There may be a slight change in speech for the first 1-2 days.
Bonded Wire retainer
Teeth can move back after orthodontic treatment. A bonded wire retainer holds them in place permanently with a wire bonded to the back of the front lower or upper teeth. The bonding material is cured with a bright light.
Bonded Fibre Retainer
A bonded fibre retainer will hold teeth in place permanently after an orthodontic treatment. A strip of fibreglass is bonded to the back of the front lower or upper teeth. The bonding material is cured with a bright light. The material is tooth coloured so virtually invisible.
Hawley Retainer
After a fixed appliance has positioned the teeth, a custom made retainer will be produced. Retainers hold teeth in their new position until bone, gums, and muscles have adapted to the new tooth positions. Retainer must be worn as instructed, otherwise teeth may move back towards their original positions and all the benefit derived from wearing braces will be lost.
Vacuum Formed Retainer
After a fixed appliance has re-positioned the teeth a custom made retainer is made to hold your teeth in the new position until bone, gums, and muscles have adapted to new teeth positions. You must wear retainers as instructed, otherwise your teeth may move toward their original position and all the benefit and hard work of wearing your braces will have been a waste of time.
